The Clone Wars have begun and the Jedi are leading the Republic’s war effort against the Separatists. Anakin is plagued by visions of his wife Padmé dying, and becomes increasingly susceptible to the dark side of the Force. Meanwhile, Palpatine, who is secretly Darth Sidious, manipulates events to turn Anakin against the Jedi and become his new apprentice, Darth Vader. The film culminates in a climactic duel between Obi-Wan and Anakin on the volcanic planet of Mustafar, where Anakin is left maimed and burned, while Palpatine declares himself Emperor and establishes the Galactic Empire.
