Viola is shipwrecked on the island of Illyria and disguises herself as a man, Cesario, in order to work for Duke Orsino, who is in love with the Countess Olivia. Olivia falls in love with Cesario, who is actually Viola in disguise, and chaos ensues when Viola’s twin brother Sebastian arrives, leading to mistaken identity and romantic confusion.
